Career Opportunity and Primary Roles / Responsibilities
We are seeking an experienced Android Software Engineer to help develop next-generation in-flight entertainment systems. You will work alongside multidisciplinary engineering teams to develop new platform capabilities, solve complex system integration challenges, and improve the performance, reliability, and quality of embedded Android solutions.
In this role, you will contribute throughout the software development lifecycle, from initial design and implementation through integration, testing, optimization, and release. Your work will involve developing and enhancing the Android platform, integrating software with embedded hardware and underlying system components, and supporting capabilities such as display, multimedia, system performance, and platform reliability.
You will collaborate closely with software, hardware, platform, architecture, security, and validation teams to bring new features to life on embedded hardware and resolve challenging system-level issues. The position provides an opportunity to work hands-on with complex embedded aerospace technology while contributing to software that must deliver consistently in demanding operational environments.
Key Responsibilities
Design, develop, integrate, and debug Android AOSP platform software, including framework, native services, HALs, display, media, input, and system services.
Develop and optimize multi-display capabilities for embedded single-VM and multi-VM environments.
Integrate Android with BSPs, kernel drivers, SoC platforms, hardware peripherals, and QNX/Linux virtualized environments.
Diagnose and resolve boot, display, multimedia, memory, performance, stability, and hardware/software integration issues.
Profile and optimize embedded Android performance, memory utilization, reliability, and system observability.
Develop production-quality software supported by unit, integration, compatibility, stress, regression, and system-level testing.
Contribute to CI/CD, automated testing, code reviews, static analysis, release management, and technical documentation.
Collaborate with architecture, application, BSP, hardware, validation, security, and external technology teams in an Agile/DevOps environment.
Required Competencies
Extensive professional experience developing and debugging Android platform software, with strong hands-on experience in AOSP framework and native layers.
Strong C/C++ and Java or Kotlin skills; proficiency with Android build systems, Linux development environments, Git, shell scripting, and Python.
Deep knowledge of Android architecture, including system services, Binder/AIDL, HALs, init, SELinux, permissions, process lifecycle, memory management, graphics/display, input, media, and power or thermal behavior.
Experience integrating Android with vendor BSPs, kernel drivers, SoC platforms, hardware peripherals, or virtualized systems.
Demonstrated ability to profile and optimize complex embedded or resource-constrained systems using quantitative evidence.
Experience designing telemetry or observability for embedded platforms, including structured logging, metrics, tracing, crash/ANR analysis, and health monitoring.
Excellent collaboration and communication skills for working with distributed teams, product and system stakeholders, and external vendors.
Experience with Android Automotive OS or adapting automotive-oriented Android components for non-automotive embedded use cases.
Experience with Qualcomm Snapdragon platforms, vendor Android forks, GPU/media acceleration, display pipelines, memory carve-outs, and chipset-vendor debugging workflows.
Experience with hypervisors and multi-VM systems, including Android guests interacting with QNX or Linux management domains through VirtIO or custom IPC.
Knowledge of IFE systems, seat-end architectures, aircraft offerability, secure media playback, Widevine/DRM, audio/video pipelines, and passenger-facing reliability expectations.
Experience with SurfaceFlinger, WindowManager, DisplayManager, Hardware Composer, Gralloc, Codec2/MediaCodec, AudioFlinger/Audio HAL, input, lights, thermal, and power HALs.
Familiarity with Android compatibility and security validation such as CTS/VTS, SELinux policy, verified boot, secure update, and vulnerability remediation.
Preferred Qualifications
10 or more years of embedded software development experience.
Experience with GPU and media acceleration, display pipelines, memory carve-outs, and chipset-vendor debugging workflows.
Experience with hypervisors and multi-VM architectures.
Experience with Android guests communicating with QNX or Linux management domains through VirtIO or custom IPC mechanisms.
Experience with Android compatibility and security validation, including CTS, VTS, SELinux policy, verified boot, secure update, and vulnerability remediation.
Experience with secure multimedia playback, Widevine or other DRM technologies, and audio/video pipelines.
Experience with embedded infotainment or passenger-facing systems requiring high availability and predictable recovery.
Familiarity with QNX Hypervisor.
Understanding of TCP/IP and HTTP/HTTPS protocols.
Familiarity with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and satellite-connectivity technologies.
Experience with aerospace, high-reliability, or safety-conscious embedded environments.
